A rare and important Hugh Philp middle spoon, ca. 1825-30. This example is from his early designs of which were larger than those toward the end of his career. His early craft was influenced by his exposure to ancient clubs from the 1700’s.
This club bears a Golden Thornwood head, well ‘hooked’ in the face, and with a very thick Ram’s horn leading edge. The shaft is a stout piece of red hickory, and retains its original sheepskin grip.
This fine spoon is a leading example of Philp’s earliest work.
